Eddie Hearn says deal done for Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury in August
Eddie Hearn announced today that IBF, WBO, WBA and IBO Champion Anthony Joshua and WBC Champion Tyson Fury are taking place in August in Saudi Arabia.
Hearn calls the news a “very bad secret” since Bob Arum has already hinted at the time and place, but nothing has been finalized yet. Speaking to Sky Sports, Hearn said, “August 7th, August 14th. I think it’s a really bad secret that the fight is taking place in Saudi Arabia. To be honest with you, I don’t mind giving you this information. “
Hearn said the same team in Saudi Arabia that helped secure the deal for Joshua’s rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr. in 2019 is the one that brought Joshua and Fury to perform in August.
Although it has not been officially finalized, Hearn said, “The deal is done. We just need the paper and make everyone feel comfortable shaking his hand. We are in this area as a team, we are in this area for boxing. Let’s go ahead and do this fight because if we don’t we are going to kick each other forever and we are going to let people down. We’re going to drop boxing if we don’t do this fight and we’re going to drop the fighters. Because this is their time, it is the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world, it is all for the sport of boxing and I will not stop until this is done.
Tyson Fury’s last fight was in February 2020 when he defeated Deontay Wilder in their rematch. Hearn has expressed concern that if the deal does not come to fruition, Fury may seek “a plan B.” However, with Arum and Hearn already making it clear that August and Saudi Arabia are what boxing fans should expect, the deal is likely done.
