Magomed Ankalaev appears to be on the verge of a fight with a former UFC title contender in Volkan Oezdemir.
Red Fury MMA reports that Ankalaev vs. Oezdemir is in preparation for a UFC event in August.
“According to many sources, Magomed Ankalaev against Volkan Oezdemir is due to be held in August. “
Ankalaev is currently ranked ahead of Oezdemir in seventh in the official UFC Light Heavyweight rankings. Oezedmir is just behind in eighth place. Despite leading the table, it will be the biggest opportunity Ankalaev has had. If he can defeat a former UFC title challenger, especially in a devastating way, it could set him up for a top-five opponent.
It is also a crucial fight for Oezdemir. He’s gone 2-4 in his last six outings. “No Time” was also due to end a three-game losing streak, beating Ilir Latifi and then Aleksandar Rakić. He was then eliminated by Jiří Procházka.
Ankalaev brings with him a pro MMA record of 15-1. He is leading a six-game winning streak. Ankalaev’s only career loss was back in March 2018 when he was submitted by Paul Craig on his UFC debut.
Oezdemir’s record is 17-5. In January 2018, he challenged Daniel Cormier for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. He received the title after first round knockout victories over Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa. No fight lasted a minute. In the end, Cormier stopped Oezdemir via TKO in the second round.
